Tourism in Belgium
Among the provinces of Belgium we emphasized two: Antwerp, that was part of the
Spanish Netherlands at the beginning of the Renaissance; and Hainault, in the
Walloon region, whose capital is the city of Mons. The port of Antwerp was then
the most important commercial center of the north of Europe. Abraham Ortelius
published in Antwerp the first copper maps. Hainault is one of the provinces
with richer history: during the Roman Empire Gallia Belgium was called, was
incorporated to the dominion of the Carolingia dynasty during the Average Age,
it was disputed by French Spaniards and, and finally scene of battles in the two
World wars.
