Tourism in Jordan
In Jordan the traveller can visit: the northern city of Irbid, with its
archaeological vestiges of the Age of Bronze, their Roman tombs and statues and
their Great Mosque; the city of Amán (Amman), modern and cosmopolitan capital of
the country; the Turkish castle of Mafraq (To the Mafraq), built in the XVI
century; the small city of Betania, at the north Dead Sea, in which Jesus of
Nazareth was baptized; the strange and beautiful city of Petra (80 kilometers to
the south of the Dead Sea), capital of the old Nabateo kingdom, with its famous
buildings dug into the rock; the castle Karak, from which the valley of the Dead
Sea is controlled; the ruins of a strong Turk of the XVIII century, in the city
of Maán (Ma' an), to the south of the country; the city of Aqabah, the single
Jordanian port, on the coast of the Red Sea; and the Dead Sea, the most
significant natural place of Jordan, a salt water lake located 415 meters under
the level of the sea.
